This battle gave the Confederates a boost knowing that they had just defeated a Union stronghold. After this battle, the president of the South, Jefferson Davis, ordered Robert E. Lee to be the General of all Southern forces. But Abraham Lincoln wouldn't give up that easily, he declared war on the South in June of 1861, shortly after the battle of Fort Sumter, also known as the battle that started the Civil War.
